Get a comprehensive eye screening

A regular eye screening and vision test is necessary for optimal eye health. Through such tests, a doctor can often detect eye conditions before they progress to more serious stages or have worse effects on your sight.

Eye screenings are chiefly diagnostic, however, so they are not meant for those who are seeking follow-ups due to existing or known conditions.

Who should get an eye screening?

Anyone seeking to ensure his or her eye health is still in good condition can come in for an eye screening. Even people with no symptoms of conditions can do it to confirm that no underlying issues are present.

How often to have your eyes checked

To diagnose cataracts, eye doctors use specific tests and a comprehensive eye check. This helps them pinpoint the issue
and exclude other potential abnormalities.

Children aged
3-5 years old

Children need their first exam before they turn 5 years old, to check for issues as soon as possible. After that, they can get screened every two years at a minimum.

Adults aged
20-39 years old

At this age, you should get screened at least once per year, especially if you have medical conditions that are also risk factors for eye conditions (e.g. diabetes). Those with perfect eyesight can get screened once every two years if they have no issues.

Adults above
40 years old

Screening is usually advised every year, or once every two years for those who do not need corrective lenses. Most screenings for this bracket will focus on identifying age-related eye conditions like cataracts.

What to expect during an eye screening

Most eye screenings are painless and last around 30 minutes. The exact amount of time required will vary depending on the tests needed, so you need to consult with your doctor first to learn what type of screening you need.

Your doctor will generally begin by asking questions about your lifestyle and family history. From there, he or she will perform a standard eye assessment. This will examine not just the eyes but also their outer regions and the eyelids.

Below are some of the things an eye doctor may perform at your screening:

Preparing for your eye screening

When coming in for an eye screening, be sure to wear your glasses but not your contact lenses.

It is also advised to come with someone or have someone drive you to and from the screening. This is because your doctor may temporarily dilate your pupils with eye drops that will blur your vision for as long as 4 to 6 hours. This will make driving inadvisable afterwards.
